Part III: The Clinton Factor
Amazingly,
upon announcing his candidacy, the relatively little-known Wesley Kanne
Clark immediately catapulted over all the other Democratic hopefuls in
a Newsweek poll! (Clark
commands as front-runner) Such survey results are suspicious, to say
the least, but, accurate or not, they do show one thing quite clearly:
Someone wants Clark to be noticed.
And that "someone" has helped jump start his campaign in other ways, as well. Despite Clark having only announced his candidacy literally days ago, he already boasts a war chest of over $1.6 million dollars (Wesley Clark vows to hold Bush accountable The claim is being made that he has "strong grassroots support," but, in reality, such a total speaks of pledges not so much in $10 to $50 range—true grassroots support, if by that is meant backing by the common people—but more like the $10,000 to $50,000 range!
While much mystery surrounds his candidacy, it is known that Clark was urged to run by Bill Clinton, who's publicly praised the general, saying: "He's a smart man, served our country well," For her part, Hillary is serving as the co-chairman of his campaign. (Her name is being linked with his to form a Democratic "dream team," though at this time it's unclear whether that would be Clark-Clinton or Clinton-Clark ticket [although a Clark-John McCain team is also conceivable], although some Republicans believe the Clintons are cynically backing a candidate they know can't win to better position Hillary for a 2008 run.) Clark says he voted for Clinton in 1992, not for the party, but for the man, who, he says, "moved me."
Wesley Clark shares some other connections to the Clintons. He, like his friend Bill Clinton, is Rhodes Scholar. (Critics of this scholarship, which brings American students to study in Britain, say that its goal is to pull the United States under the sway of the United Kingdom. Interestingly, on 3/29/00 Clark was appointed an Honorary Commander of the British Empire by order of Queen Elizabeth in recognition of his role as NATO commander in the Kosovo War.) Like Hillary, in his youth his family moved from Illinois to Arkansas and he's gone from being a conservative Republican to a liberal Democrat. As mentioned above, he has Eli Segal as an advisor, as did President Clinton, but there is far more that makes the Clark campaign very Clintonesque. Ron Fournier, in an Associated Press article, writes:
After watching from the sidelines for months, former Commerce Secretary
Mickey Kantor (photo, left) was lured into action by presidential
candidate Wesley Clark—with a nudge from former President Clinton.
"The president knows General Clark better than I know General Clark, and I
just asked what he thought," Kantor recalled. "He said, `I have a
tremendous regard for him.'"
And with that, Kantor joined Clark's campaign as a senior adviser. (Clinton
Shadow Looms Over Clark Campaign)
Fournier also noted that
Clark's
advisers include several other former Clinton administration officials,
including Mark Fabiani and Eli Segal (photo, right).
When Clark convened the first conference call of his campaign, he was joined by
several Clinton allies including former White House Chief of Staff John Podesta,
former White House aide Rahm Emanuel, now a congressman from Illinois, and
former Clinton White House press secretary Mike McCurry, participants said.¼
One participant told Clark that James Carville and Paul Begala, two high-profile
Clinton consultants, would be available to advise him. "I've offered to help all
the candidates," Begala said in telephone interview.
In addition, "Skip Rutherford, head of the Clinton presidential library, former White House lawyer Bruce Lindsey, former Sen. David Pryor, D-Ark., and the entire Arkansas congressional delegation lined up behind Clark this week."
But wait, there's more! Lowell Ponte reports that
In fact he does appear to be supported by much of the Clintons’ political war machine. Among those flocking to his campaign are Clinton veteran gutter fighters Mark Fabiani, Bruce Lindsey, Bill Oldaker, Vanessa Weaver, George Bruno, Skip Rutherford, Peter Knight, Ron Klain and perhaps even former Clinton deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes, among others. (Wesley Clark: A Clinton by another name?)
Of those mentioned above, Kantor and Emmanuel were two of what the leftwing National Jewish Democratic Council identifies as "the unprecedented number of American Jews holding cabinet-level posts" in the Clinton Administration.
