Veterans and survivors of the U.S.S. Liberty gathered
Saturday to remember their own. The bombing of the U.S.S.
Liberty during the Six Day War killed 34 Sailors and Marines.
In June of 1967, Veterans say Israeli aircraft and motor
boats bombed the ship in an effort to sink it, blame the Arab
States, and draw the U.S. into war. Israel claimed the
bombing was a mistake, and the U.S. complied. It`s been a
matter of controversy since. But for veterans today it`s
is an opportunity to remember those who died, particularly one
sailor from Keithville, Louisiana. "I`m very proud it`s
up," said William Lupton. "Something I think honors those
34-men, and one of those men is my brother. My little
brother." Other vets came out for support. "It`s
wonderful that even though it`s taken this much time," said
local Veteran Joe Bizet. "We can at least put the name out and
say thank you." The memorial is a project of local
veterans. They are also sponsoring a Memorial in Corpus
Christi, Texas. |
